Jacques André

Jacques André was born in Brittany. Trained at INSAS (Brussels), he lives between Paris and Belgium. Alone or in collaboration, he leads - between image and living art - a multimedia creation work: art video, creative documentary, performance, staging, interactive scenic device, installation, or more recently, 3D animation coupled with data programming. Its ongoing project 'My organs, my data' (initiated with the help of Balsamine, François Zajega and the Fédération Wallonie Bruxelles) is an illustration of this. It combines memories and technologies, sense and sensitivity, to question our oral and visual assumptions through the body. His personal works are often developed in cycles around visions of the body and skin, words, racism, the relationship between art and science, or from authors such as Kleist and Marguerite Duras. In 2018, he created with Isabelle Dumont a stage laboratory, 'Bacteria Mundi', at the Balsamine. Awarded various prizes or scholarships, supported by various public subsidies, he is also an artistic advisor (observatory of the CNES Space of Paris, ISELP, MRBA, La Cambre...) and author of articles for specialized magazines or collective works.

Mes organes, mes datas (Talk in French)

A 'guinea pig' of what he explores during his lecture, Jacques André reveals perspectives and results discovered in the survey conducted over two years to build a performance in the making: 'My organs, my data'.

Between fascination and fear, this project was born from the observation that connected objects that allow bodily self-measurement transform our representations of the body, mind, social relationships and life perspectives. Wearing on our belt or in our pocket, included in our shoes, scales, watches, bracelets, rings, armbands, jerseys, tattoos on our skin, often unsuspected in our smartphones, so-called 'personal' sensors translate our bodily privacy into data. Networking, often without our knowledge, do these 'biodatas' only reduce our image and sensations in terms of parameter curves? Their proliferation is driven by illusions of medical or hygienic self-control, reinforced by the diffusion of summary health standards that make individuals feel guilty, pushed by surveillance mechanisms related to pharmaceutical and insurance activities, if not to human resources management or police prevention. But at the same time, they increase and diversify our relationships with bodies, putting them into 'conversation'. They are producers of signs of gestural agitation, effort, heart or respiratory rhythms, conductivity, temperatures, etc. They show how much the interior of our body is connected in a generalized upheaval of our perceptions, sensations or knowledge.
