Francois Knoetze
Francois Knoetze (b. 1989 in Cape Town, South Africa) is a scavenger, sculptor, performer and filmmaker interested in mapping rhizomatic connections between social histories and material culture. Since completing his formal education in 2015, Knoetze’s practice has been itinerant. He has spent the past 5 years working on projects in South Africa, Tanzania (Nafasi Art Space AIR), the Democratic Republic of Congo (Kinact3), Dakar (Afropixel6/Digital Imaginaries), New York, Chengdu and Shenzhen (Digital Earth Fellowship).

Core Dump
This year, KIKK collaborates with Ker Thiossane & The Dak'art Bienale with curators Delphine Buysse and Marion Louisgrand Sylla to show a selection of artists from the African Continent and the diaspora in the exhibition.
A core dump is a recorded state of the working memory of a computer at specific moment in time. If a crash occurs, the computer is able to recall this ‘imprint’ of its previous state as a means to debug and recover. This strangely poetic ‘memory’ of a computer forms the basis of Core Dump (2019), a work in four chapters, set in Dakar, New York, Shenzhen and Kinshasa, which extends the metaphor of a ‘crash’ to the impending breakdown and unsustainability of a global Capitalist system, an ‘Invisible Empire’, characterised by the glut of excess and its fascination with hypermodernity masquerading as progress.
